The Kangaroo Song

It is part of our nightly routine with Eden to sing her bedtime songs.  We don't read books, we sing.  Quite intellectual of us, eh? lol So it's a well known fact that Daddy is just more fun than Mommy and his bedtime songs usually include laughing and giggling while Mommy's are far more lulling with her favorites being Amazing Grace, It is Well, and When You Say Nothing At All.  You guys are getting the picture here.  lol

Last night was no exception.  I sat on the couch feeding Isla and smiled as I hear giggling, tickling, and generally happy noises bounded through Eden's bedroom door.  Finally, I hear Christian say "OK, now let's start singing.  It's time to go to bed."  Due to the fact that we do each have our own list of "hits" or Eden's favorites, it's not uncommon for one of us to be doing the bedtime routine and hear an unknown request.  Eden will often request "The Chicken Song" and I will tell her "Oh, that must be a Daddy song because Mommy doesn't know that one".  So there they are in the bedroom and Christian has finally decided to calm her and begin the songs.  I hear hear excitedly say, "What bout da kangaroo song?"  Now every little girl needs a Daddy like Christian.  Someone who genuinely wants to please his daughter.  Someone who's willing to go above and beyond to be silly and have fun and most importantly, give it 110%.  I think to myself "Hmm...must be a new Daddy song they've learned."  I keep my ears peeled, thinking I'm sure to hear a new 'fun' song that Daddy knows and I don't.

Christian doesn't miss a beat.  He says to her, "Hmm...how does it go?"  She gives him a flat one liner without any melody "Kangaroo, hop hop".  He jumps right in and begins "Kangarooooooo, Hop, Hop! Kanga-roooo, hoooop, hoppp! Kannnnnng-a-rooo, hop hop hop!" Now even changing notes and making up a melody all on his own "Kangarooooo kanga-rooooo, ew ew, hop! HOP!"

Now in Isla's nursery immediately adjacent to Eden's room changing Isla's diaper, I exploded into laughter.  The longer it went on the harder I laughed.  I thought I would pee my pants trying to keep the laughter to a quite whisper.  Who knew a man could make up a 10 minute song with 3 words and no given notes?! Only my talented husband, singer!

When Christian emerged, he was seemingly unaware of the humor he'd provided...until he saw my face!  I burst into tears with laughter as I told him how impressed I was with his 'new song'.  The best part was that Eden never questioned the song.  Not once did she say "that's not the words" or "that's not how it goes".  I think even she was suprised that he'd gone on for so long.  She was probably thinking it was a real song!  The longer I thought about it, the more I laughed.

Perhaps this is one of those "you had to be there moments", but it was so good I had to write it down so that years from now we can look bad fondly on Christian's Kangaroo Moment.

  2. Cute..Cute....Cute...FYI....Making up song lyrics is hidden in the male gene pool and comes out at fatherhood....Christian has obviously tapped into this infinite source of giggles.
