Day 12 - 30 Day Challenge

Day 12 - A Picture of Something You Love

I have no idea where my obsession with names came from. I've owned baby name books since I was a teenager.  At one point in time (prior to even knowing my betrothed, I should note) I had at least 18 different books.  I'll also make the confession that once we found out we were pregnant, I purchased a 2nd copy of my favorite baby name book, The Baby Name Wizard because my original copy was so worn! LOL  I'll also admit that even in high school, I was an active member of a baby names message board. :0)

When I was little, I used to like to play school or office and would make up a name for myself.  I'd often insist that my friends make up names for themselves too.  (Poor Leslie!)  I named all of my stuff animals and dolls, of course.  When trolls became popular and I had a large collection, I insisted on naming them all and writing their names on the bottom of their feet. Oh yes, and I persuaded (though she says forced) Leslie to do the same.  LOL

When my little brother Zach was still in the womb, I loved talking about names with my step-mother.  When Mom became pregnant with the girls, it was even better when we found out they were twins!  Though we didn't know their gender, I can remember being super excited about picking out their names!  In fact, one of my most clear memories is being in the old blue mini van with Mom and discussing the name Hannah.  I suggested the middle name Brooke and I remember being especially pleased when Mom liked the idea!

I think it was secretly the names that was part of the lure of the infamous Beanie Babies.  And we all remember my obsession with those!

I've always been intrigued with unique names, spellings, history behind them, meanings, etc.  It's probably some of my attraction to other languages (Spanish, of course) as well.  Now that I'm "grown", selecting names for my children has been a true delight.  It's a process that's probably much longer (and painful for my husband) than normal for me.  I make lists and lists and some names get crossed off only to get re-added later.  Initials, meanings, honoring loved ones, and spellings all come into play.  Friends and relatives are always delighted when they must wait the duration of my pregnancy not only to find out the gender of the baby, but also to find out any names we're considering.  The truth of the matter is, I'm conflicted enough and change my mind quite enough to try and include anyone else's opinion other than my husband!  Poor guy has a rough time! Haha!
